“I won’t be silenced.”
It was a breakthrough moment, when she said it with tears spilling down her cheeks. She realised that she had been complicit in her partner’s attempts to keep her imprisoned in a silence. They both knew that their relationship had become toxic, but she had allowed her partner to silence her.
This realisation bit hard because she realised she had done the same thing in other relationships; with friends who had let her down, badly, and as a daughter to parents who were too captivated by their own image to see her needs.
But the tears that were spilling down her cheeks were cleansing, because at least now she knows the part she plays in this silence. And this has given her the opportunity to choose a different way.
‘I won’t be silenced’ she repeated, but this time smiling.
