What is counselling?

What is counselling?

It is a safe space to explore your experiences.  You cannot change what you are not fully aware of, but it can be difficult to gain this awareness on your own.  Working with a supportive counsellor, you will have the opportunity to really look at your life, and assess what needs to change.  Once you are clear about what needs to change, you can then use the supportive counselling relationship to work through that change, making sure that it is really what you want, and if it is, to ensure that the change is sustainable.

Counselling also offers you the chance to replace other people’s values with your own.  We have all grown up with the loud shout of other people's voices, and sometimes this means that we are unclear what our own voice is trying to say.  Counselling can offer the opportunity to really hear our own voice, and decide whether it is that voice, or someone else's, that we wish to follow.

Finally, counselling offers the chance to activate a person’s capacity to heal.  In each of us we have the ability to nurture ourselves, and to heal our own wounds.  Sometimes we need help with activating this ability, but eventually we can take the responsibility from the counsellor and learn to heal and comfort ourselves.
