For a therapist, social justice is a requirement (not an aspiration)

​I am beyond frustrated when I hear someone tell me that a therapist should “not get involved with politics.” This attitude comes from a place of ignorance about the ethical framework that regulates therapists in the United States.
 
Here is why…

The American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics lists "promoting social justice" as one of five core professional values.
Counselors are required to advocate for policies that increase access to mental health care and reduce inequities.
 
According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, which governs social workers, "Social workers should challenge social injustice" and pursue social change, particularly on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed populations.
This is a core ethical principle, not just an aspiration.
 
A commitment to social justice requires ongoing education to recognize and dismantle personal biases and systemic inequalities. 
 
It could not be clearer than that.
