Kids going back to school?

Kids going back to school? Here are 7 essential reminders about bullying and group dynamics:

1.Remind your kids that they have an inner wisdom that is just as important as the views expressed by any friendship group. Their task is not to assimilate with a group, but to learn how to constantly strike a balance between the views of the group and their inner wisdom.

2.Caution your kids about manipulative alphas and their flying monkeys. ‘Going along with the group’ can sometimes be a front for compliance with the wishes of a manipulative alpha, and for the benefit of that alpha.

3.Valuing popularity increases the risk of burnout. When we value popularity over anything else, we become a chameleon, and in doing so, we create a huge amount of internal friction by ignoring our inner wisdom. This internal friction doesn’t just go away; it builds up levels of the harmful stress hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine.

4.When it comes to friendships, it is all about quality, not quantity. It is more beneficial for a person’s mental health to develop friendships based on trust and mutual respect. This takes time and effort, so it is much more likely that you will develop a quality small number of friends than a large number. In contrast, when people pursue popularity by ‘collecting’ large numbers of people, they are objectifying those people, and they act in a socially aggressive and manipulative way. In other words, they are only interested in you to become their audience, they are unlikely to be interested in developing trust and mutual respect. A quality approach to friendships forms strong bonds, whereas a quantity approach forms tenuous bonds.

5.Popularity is not likeability. Likeability involves trust, reliability, and mutual respect, whereas popularity requires an audience, and it is almost always a manifestation of social aggression where status is secured through intimidation, exclusion, and psychological control.

6.Don’t confuse popularity and success. Success is the achievement of a goal, or, in other words, whether you did the thing. Popularity is less about whether you did the thing but how many people were watching.

7.Don’t confuse genuine kindness and compassion with performative altruism. One requires an audience, and the other does not.
