Today is National PTSD Awareness Day.
PTSD can involve re-experiencing a trauma (flashbacks, nightmares, etc), and this can be so vivid that the person believes they are back in the traumatic event. This can be extremely distressing, and debilitating. Someone with PTSD can also end up avoiding the places, people or objects that remind them of the trauma, and they can startle easily. Finally, PTSD can lead to distortions in the way we think, sometimes causing memory loss, or excessively negative thinking. PTSD can be terrifying, but there is hope for change. One of the treatments that is supported by research is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy).
