The Hidden Ceiling: Why Capacity Isn't Just About Time Management

When we carry trauma, our Window of Tolerance (the zone where we can handle stress effectively) often becomes narrower. This shows up at work in a number of ways:
  • You’re stuck in "fight or flight." You’re overachieving, micromanaging, or feeling constant urgency and irritability. You can’t "turn off" even after you clock out.
  • You’re “fawning.” You’ll do anything, you’ll go the extra mile, even if that causes great distress for your physical or mental health.
  • You’ve hit "freeze." You’re procrastinating, feeling numb or foggy, and staring at your inbox for hours without being able to respond.

You aren't lazy, and you aren't "difficult." Your nervous system is trying to protect you. Healing involves widening that window so you can feel safe enough to simply work.

How EMDR helps widen the window:

Think of trauma like a "blockage" in your nervous system's processing plant. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or taps) to help your brain finally "digest" those old, stuck memories.

Instead of your brain seeing everyday events as a life-or-death threat, EMDR helps move that memory into long-term storage. This lowers the baseline of your nervous system, widening your window so you can handle a busy Tuesday without spiraling into a survival state.

While social media is great for awareness, it isn't a replacement for a therapeutic relationship.

If you would like to explore this more, you can book online for an initial telephone conversation with me. Then, if you are ready, we can look at booking an initial assessment.

I look forward to hearing from you.
