Trauma therapy & our innate ability to heal/grow

When it comes to trauma therapy, here are some of my beliefs as a psychotherapist:
  • We all have talents, strengths, and resources.
  • We all have an innate ability to heal and grow.
  • Many of us are constrained by trauma in the form of early neglect, abandonment, and violence.
  • Often, we internalize the failings of other people (eg, the failings of our caregivers).
  • As a result, these failings of others can produce extremes in emotions and beliefs that we use against ourselves.
  • Often therapy involves re-parenting ourselves, and befriending ourselves.
  • Often this is the only opportunity to heal from past trauma.
  • It is more important to identify the networks of internal relationships  in which parts are embedded and the extreme beliefs parts may carry, than it is to label someone or identify ‘disorders’ and ‘deficits’.
