Loneliness
Loneliness can have a severe impact on our mental health. It is one of the key factors involved with depression, anxiety, and relationship conflict, so at Explore Transform, loneliness is a major focus for our approach to psychotherapy.
Loneliness isn't a numbers game; you can feel lonely in a crowded room. Loneliness involves feeling emotionally disconnected from others, either because they don't care, respect, or understand you. So, loneliness is about the quality of our social interactions rather than the quantity.
Often there is shame attached to loneliness. However, we see loneliness as an inevitable symptom of a society that has become more dependent on technology and less appreciative of the benefits of person to person interaction. At Explore Transform, we will help to de-stigmatize loneliness.
One of the obstacles to quality social interaction is when we don't feel safe to connect with others. This might be because of trauma we have experienced, or the result of our identity as part of a marginalized group. At Explore Transform, we focus on empowering you to face these challenges with a clear awareness of the difficulties involved. One of the approaches we take to trauma is to use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy), and you can read more about that approach here.
