A passion for helping people
We are a psychotherapy practice based in Ridgewood, Bergen County, New Jersey. We specialize in burnout, loneliness, and powerlessness; three of the most pressing issues when it comes to our mental health.
Studies show that burnout, loneliness, and powerlessness can intensify or prolong symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, and other mental health challenges. These issues can leave us feeling depleted and overwhelmed, posing a threat to our work life as much as our personal relationships. Neglecting these issues often leads to a downward spiral, which is harder to resolve the longer you leave it.
The good news is that because burnout, loneliness, and powerlessness are related, working on one of these issues often leads to improvements in the other two areas. For example, when you work on your powerlessness, you feel empowered to take steps to reduce the likelihood of burnout. Often this will involve making use of social connections, which reduces the feelings of loneliness.
We take pride in helping people to make meaningful and long-term changes in their lives. We also appreciate the positive feedback we have received from fellow clinicians, and you can read some of those reviews here. Alongside our passion for helping people achieve change, we also love to write about topics that pose a challenge to many people's mental health. You can have a look at some of our articles here.
We offer a Polyvagal-informed approach to psychotherapy and we make use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR). There is plenty of research to show how effective EMDR is for a wide range of issues including symptoms relating to trauma (for example, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD)), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, panic disorder, anxiety, and depression, to name a handful. During our many years of experience, we have found that EMDR and Polyvagal theory have been the most accessible and most effective models to use, especially because they encapsulate a trauma-informed approach that is supported by years of research by neuroscientists, psychologists, and psychiatrists. You can read more about Polyvagal theory and EMDR here.
Whether you work with a therapist on a short-term or long-term basis depends on several factors, and we can discuss these with you during your initial assessment. What is important is coming up with a plan that works for you, and that you feel you have played a part in creating it. We have encountered too many healthcare professionals who impose their preconceived judgments or do not take the time to listen carefully to the people they are working with. We will do everything we can to show you respect and, on a continuous basis, listen to your verbal and non-verbal communication.
The initial plan we come up with may change as we progress through the work. Sometimes a person seeks therapy for one issue and, after a bit of exploration, they realize there is a different (more important) issue that should take priority. We expect this to happen, and we are happy to work flexibly to best meet your needs.
At Explore Transform, we take pride in recognizing the impact of societal pressures on a person's mental health, so this significantly informs our work. We have found that clinicians who neglect the societal aspects of a person's mental health often end up pathologizing people or adding to their anxiety or depression by making them feel excessively responsible for issues that might fall outside of their control. This is one of the reasons we focus on powerlessness as one of the central themes that impact our mental health. We take pride in having lived in and worked with the LGBTQ+ community, so we are in a good position to understand the impact of marginalization on a person's mental health. However, no matter how much there may be an overlap in experiences, we will never make assumptions about how these have impacted your life. We recognize that each person is the result of their unique experiences.
We offer psychotherapy to people in New Jersey and certain US states now falling within the Counseling Compact. Please contact us to discuss the scope of this. More details can be found here, on our fee page.
